Leading Contenders To Be The New Host City of the European Medicines Agency

The decision on the new host city of the European Medicines Agency is imminent.  Regular visitors to this site will be aware that we have highlighted the chances of a number of the main contenders over the last 6 months.  Many of these analysis pieces have been featured in international publications and have been the focus of interviews on international TV and radio stations. With the decision on the new host city of the European Medicines Agency just days away, we are looking at the main contenders from the 19 applications. Please note:  this article was written in October 2017 when the decision to relocate the European Medicines Agency was still a ‘live’ issue.  

Amsterdam

  Amsterdam is surely one of the leading cities competing to host the European Medicines Agency. According to Dutch news sources, the bid team is working hard to ensure that the city can host EMA staff and families by working to increase the availability of suitable housing and international school places.  The Amsterdam bid has been recognised as being both professional and somewhat tongue in cheek.  Have a look at the official video for their bid.

Barcelona

  As inducements go, few are as tempting as the Torre Agbar in Barcelona.  The iconic Catalan skyscraper has been offered to the European Medicines Agency should they wish to choose Barcelona as their next home.  Nevertheless, the civil and political disquiet of recent weeks will have impacted the bid’s chances.  You can read more about the Barcelona bid by clicking the image above.

Copenhagen

Milan

  We first wrote about Milan as a possible home for the European Medicines Agency approximately 12 months ago.  The Italian city was ‘quickest out of the blocks’ in staking its claim to host the European Medicines Agency.  It’s charismatic Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, travelled to London just days after the June 23rd 2016 referendum result was announced to highlight his city’s bid for the EMA and its financial counterpart, the European Banking Authority.    

Stockholm

  Stockholm, which we identified at the start of the year as a serious contender to host the European Medicines Agency, remains in contention and has much to offer as the new home to the European body. Vienna

  The Austrian capital Vienna is regarded by many as being a quiet contender in the competition to land the European Medicines Agency.  Nevertheless, it has put forward an exceptionally strong bid that will likely see it in the final contention when voting takes place on November 20th next.
